Description
Decorative late 17th Century Map of the Southern Provinces of China, showing Quandong and Fujian with parts of Quangxi & Jiangxi. Visible mid-centre is the Pearl River Delta with the 16th Century Portuguese settlement of Macao. The adjacent coastal regions had yet to witness the emergence of the 19th Century British colonial outpost of Hong Kong & the late 20th Century industrial power house & metropolis that is present-day Shenzen. Also included are the islands of Hainan (lower left) and Taiwan (upper right) and parts of Luzon & the Northern Philippines (lower centre). The map was originally published in Italy in about 1695 by the renowed Venetian mapmaker, Vincenzo Coronelli [1650-1718] and appeared in his Atlas, "Corso Geografico Universale".
