Description
One of the earliest maps of the Land of Oz, the imaginary setting for the famous series of books by American author, L Frank Baum [1856-1919] which began with his "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" [1900]. Baum died in 1919 shortly after the completion of his fourteenth Oz book. This decorative & whimsical map was separately issued very shortly afterwards, in about 1920, by Chicago publishers, Reilly & Lee, as a posthumous tribute to the author & as a promotional piece for his remarkable series of Oz books. It thus predates by some 19 years the famous film adaption of Baum's first 1900 Oz book, starring Judy Garland. The design follows closely that of the map featured in the front endpapers of the 1914 edition of "Tik Tok of Oz" with the author given as "Prof. Wogglebug T.E" (Mr Highly Magnified Woggle-Bug, Thoroughly Educated), founder of the Royal College of Art & Athletic Perfection. The four regions of the country are delineated in contrasting colors - Munchkin Country (blue), Gillikin Country (purple), Winkie Country (yellow) and Quadling Country (red) with the central Emerald City. The spot "Where Dorothy's House Fell" is located in Munchkin Country adjacent to the "Road of Yellow Brick" which dissects the region, leading directly towards the Emerald City. One of the cartographic anomalies of the map is that its orientation is shown in mirror image - Winkie Country, home of the Wicked Witch of the West, is thus shown in the East (right) and Munchkin Country, the Kingdom of the the Wicked Witch of the East, is shown in the West (left). On the other more general map showing the regions surrounding Oz & used as the rear endpaper of the 1914 edition of "Tik Tok of Oz" this error was resolved by simply reversing the East-West orientation of the compass.
