Description
One of the finest & most decorative of late 16th Century Dutch World maps, the collaborative work of master engraver Johannes van Doetechum and renowned Dutch mapmaker, Petrus Plancius [1552-1622]. Engraved in 1594, it is the first Dutch map to incorporate decorative & sumptuously embellished symbolic borders around the peripheries of the two hemispheres of the actual map. These depict six different regions of the World represented in female form - Europa, Africa, Asia aswell as Mexicana, Peruana and Magallanica, each surrounded by the exotic landscapes and strange flora and fauna of their native territories. For the latter regions these include vivid scenes of indigenous cannibalism and exotic wildlife such as the longtailed birds of paradise of Magallanica, curiously depicted without any feet. Based in Amsterdam, Petrus Plancius was able to access the latest reports of Portuguese and Dutch explorers and cartographers, which are here incorporated into the geographical outlines on the map itself, most notably in the Far East and South East Asia. The map was first included in the 1599 complilation of travels edited by the Dutch adventurer, Jan Huygen van Linschoten [1563-1611], entitled "Itinerario", an immensely popular work, which went through numerous Latin & European language editions through to the 1640s.
