Artist's Description
Designed by Lilian Lancaster in 1912 to illustrate E L Hoskyn's book of traditional folk tales and legends, this pictorial map of Germany illustrates the popular centuries-old legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin or Hameln. During the late 13th Century, it is said that this small German town in Lower Saxony suffered a plague of rats and so engaged a musician with a magical pipe with which to lure the troublesome rodents out of the town. When he failed to receive payment for his services from the town authorities, the enraged musician used the magic pipe to entice over a hundred of the town's children from their homes whilst their parents were at Church. Leading them in a long line out of the town they disappeared into a nearby cave, never to be seen again. Deeply embedded in medieval folklore & local history, the origins of this legend remain shrouded in mystery.
