Artist's Description
Designed by Tokyo University student, Kisaburo Ohara, and derived from British mapmaker Fred W Rose's earlier 1877 Octopus Map of Europe, this stunning satirical propaganda map was published in Japan in 1904 at the time of the Russo - Japanese War. The all entangling Russian Octopus extends its tentacles not only across Europe over the Far East aswell. Japan's subsequent victory against the Russians in this short 18 month conflict announced the country's arrival as a new & significant military power both in the Far East & on the wider World stage.
