Description
Designed and published in 1906 by the Chicago firm of J I Austen, this novelty Map of the Sea of Matrimony was designed as a folding postcard booklet, whose inside flaps provided instructions on the best route & navigation through these ever-hazardous waters. A course is provided from Hullabaloo Bay via Honeymoon Island, First Quarrel Reef, Cape Henpeck, Reef of Hubby's Woe, Servant Archipelago (an indication of the affluent target market at which these novelty maps were aimed) before reaching the Isles of Little Blessings. Coming ashore at Comfy Cove, these now mature parents chart their onward family course via Mt Baldy and Golden Wedding Island to reach the retiring mountainous uplands of Mt. Peace, Mt Joy and Mt. Heart's Desire. The Chicago firm of J J Austen remained an active player in the US postcard and novelty card market in the first two decades of the 20th Century.
