Description
Decorative early 1950s cartoon-style treasure hunter's map of the Southeastern United States, depicting supposed sites of hidden or sunken treasure during the previous four hundred years since the time of the first European explorers and particularly during the 17th & 18th Centuries when the region became the haunt of many infamous pirates. Perhaps the most famous trove was that of José Gaspar (Gasparilla), pictured bottom centre, "the last of the Bucaneers", who, if popular legend is to be believed, famously jumped overboard to avoid capture before his ship was sunk along with its multi-million dollar cargo by a US gunboat due west of Punta Gorda, Florida in 1821. The map was drawn by "Biff Baker" & "Buz Sawyer" cartoonist, Hank Schlensker [1914-1997] and copyrighted in 1952 by the Orlando antique gun collector, researcher & publisher, Fred C Keiser [1907-1982]. The original map proved extremely popular, selling many thousands of copies during the 1950s, as treasure hunting in the US grabbed the popular imagination.
