Description
This stunning and highly decorative map of Japan, the first separate map of the island, was published by Flemish cartographer, Abraham Ortelius [1527-1598] in the 1595 edition of his milestone World Atlas, "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" and included in all subsequent editions through to 1612. Japan was a distant and little-known country to Europeans at this time, though many of the initial contacts in the early & mid-16th Century had been through Portuguese explorers and merchants followed closely by Jesuit missionaries. Ortelius' information had come from the reports of the Portuguese cartographer, Luis Teixeira. Note the curious depiction of Korea as an elongated island, an anomaly that would not be corrected on European maps of the region for another 50 years.
